Year 5

Year 5 Art Week

Year 5 have been exploring the craft of quilt making from its history in American communities to present day contemporary styles with the help of 2 Colston's parent quiltmakers / textile artists. One of the ideas is that "the whole is more than the sum of its parts".

Each child will be thinking about an image that represents something of their place in their community and will be making a paper stencil of that image. The stencil will then be used to make a screen printed image with the help of local artist, Simon Tozer. They will also have a second copy of this image to take home with them.

The children will then embroider or embellish their screen printed square with a variety of sewing techniques before machine sewing their piece onto a background fabric.

The original plan was to make 2 quilts to hang on the wall. But an inspired parent had the brainwave of making each panel into a pair of curtains to hang outside Miss John's classroom where year 5 children get changed for P.E. This will replace the very old grubby pair of curtains that is currently hanigng there. We hope that the children will continue to see their work over the next 12 months as they visit the secret garden or Mr Insell's classroom.
