Year 3

Year 3 Art Week

Earlier in the year, as part of their geography and history studies 3W and 3R explored the neighbourhood around the school. The children learned about the history of Cotham and also how architectural features can be used to identify the age and purpose of a building. The children then drew sketches of various local buildings and landmarks.

As an extension of this project the children have now turned their attention to their own homes and they will be painting portraits of the buildings in which they live.

In preparation for this, the children have sketched their own homes, taken photographs and made notes of specific details they wish to incorporate into their finished works. They have also looked at paintings by renaissance artists, impressionists, fauvists and photo-realists and discussed what they think these painters were interested in when they were painting. They have thought about details they might include in order to tell the viewer a little bit about themselves, such as pets, siblings and parents, plants, toys and other items that might be seen through a window.

The children will work in paint on board, and these panels will then be fixed to the walls of the year 3 and 4 cloakrooms to form a permanent frieze above the coat pegs.

Along side this project the children will be making designs on pieces of pine using  'pyrogravure' (the technique of burning images into wood) to create a name plate for their bedroom door at home.
