Year 1 and 6

Year 1 & 6 Art Week

Community in the classroom

3D Sculpture & Community

Building on the success of reading workshops, Year 1 & Year 6 will work together on art week in 2010.

Working with sculptor, Anna Orrin, the first day the young people will explore the ideas of identity and community.  The classes will work in pairs on small-scale clay models of each other, these will be displayed in the style of Anthony Gormley in the Year 3 cloakroom.

On the second day the pupils will work with artist Tanja Helmold to help construct a community ‘wishing web’ in the school playground.

‘Bubbles’ will be made of themselves and their friends to hang in the class community web, and representations of their hobbies or special objects to hang in the web.

The pupils will then be asked to make literal connections via chalk and elastic to link their communities together, and finally add a wish for their community to the sculpture.

The work during art week will ask the children to consider what makes a ‘community’ and what is ‘special’ to them in their community.
