Here is an outline of the children's work for this term:
Literacy: All children will take part in a daily literacy lesson, reading and writing a wide range of texts from various fiction and non-fiction genres. We aim to hear every child read as part of a group or on an individual basis once a week. Reading at home will continue to contribute significantly to children's progress.
Numeracy: The children are set in three Numeracy groups five days per week. Having three smaller groups rather than two larger groups allows children to receive more personalised attention. We follow the National Numeracy Framework, covering all the strands of mathematics.
Science: In Science lessons the children will complete our programme of revision, leading upto SATs.
ICT: The children are timetabled for lessons in the ICT suite every week. They will learn how to use the internet effectively for research purposes.
Art: During this term the children will participate in Art Week.
D.T. During the afternoons of SATs week children will have the opportunity to design and make fairground rides. This is a major project which children become incredibly excited by. Children often describe SATs week as one of the best weeks of the year!
Geography: The children will study different aspects of coastal environments.
Music: Rehearsal and performance will be a key feature of the year six performance.
Games and P.E.: The focus for Games this term is cricket and rounders. The children will have specialist coaching in tennis and swimming.
P.S.H.M.E.: Our topics in P.S.H.E. include Relationships and Changes. We also study a sex education unit. Part of this unit will be delivered by the school nurse.
Special Events: SATs week takes place from the 12th-16th May. We then start to think about the children's transition to secondary school. Teachers from Cotham School visit to deliver lessons and teachers from other schools may visit to chat to those children going on to that school. Children also have the opportunity to participate in the swimming gala and at sports day. Year six camp takes place in Exmouth from 23rd June to 27th June. The year culminates in the Year Six Production.
Reading and Homework
At first homework will continue as before but after SATs the focus of homework will move away from numeracy and literacy.
