Here is an outline of the children's work for this term:
Literacy: All children will take part in a daily literacy lesson, reading and writing a wide range of texts from various fiction and non-fiction genres. We aim to hear every child read as part of a group or on an individual basis once a week. Reading at home will continue to contribute significantly to children's progress.
Numeracy: The children are set in three Numeracy groups five days per week. Having three smaller groups rather than two larger groups allows children to receive more personalised attention. We follow the National Numeracy Framework covering all the strands of mathematics. The children will continue to improve the speed and accuracy of their Times Tables Challenge as good times-table knowledge underpins so many aspects of mathematics.
Science: In Science lessons the children will learn about green plants, classification and identification, interdependence and adaptation in living creatures, micro-organisms and electricity.
ICT: The children are timetabled for lessons in the ICT suite every week. They will be using the Dance E-Jay software to analyse, improve and compose electronic music. Later in the term, they design their own web pages. They also use the suite to research aspects of World War II, create animations related to their art work and produce the school newspaper, The Colston Chronicle.
Art: This term the children will produce work on the theme People in Action and also design costumes. They will study various artists and research costume from different cultures. During this term most children will take their turn to work with resident artist Budgie Summers, producing work inspired by the artist-architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
Music: The children will work with the specialist music teacher from Cotham School.
History: This term the children will be studying World War Two, focussing particularly upon the experiences of wartime children.
Games and P.E.: The focus for Games this term is hockey and netball/basketball. In dance, they will work with the specialist teacher from Cotham School to produce a class piece. The children will have specialist coaching in badminton and swimming. (Alternating on a half-termly basis.)
R.E. and P.S.H.M.E.: Learning will be based on the theme of worship. Our topics in P.S.H.E. include New Beginnings and Getting on and Falling out. The children also study the unit Say No to Bullying. This normally coincides with anti-bullying week. We also study a safety and citizenship unit.
Special Events: We will be having an Anti-Bullying week and our usual Harvest Festival. In December the children will produce the school newspaper The Colston Chronicle, celebrating events and achievements throughout the school.
