Maths: Children will continue to develop their mental and written calculation strategies in all four operations. They will carry out work on negative numbers, rounding decimal numbers, probability, data handling, capacity, angles, fractions and percentages, square numbers and factors. We will also be carrying out number investigations to allow children to use problem solving skills in context. All children will be expected to practise their 10 x 10 times tables.
Literacy: Children will carry out work on a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts and poetry. They will be concentrating on persuasive writing, Stories from a variety of cultures and performance poetry. In addition to this children will further develop their comprehension skills and extend their understanding of grammatical features. In particular they will be given opportunities to write for a range of audiences and purposes. It is expected that children will continue to read regularly at home to increase their vocabulary and general understanding of text as well as practise spellings on a daily basis, which will be monitored by their set teacher. A teacher will come in from a local secondary school to give drama lessons.
Science: Children will follow units of work on Gases Around Us and Life Cycles. These will give children an opportunity to practise their investigative and observational skills and to link these to scientific knowledge.
ICT: Children will visit the I.C.T. Suite once a week following a Unit of Work on Monitoring Environmental Conditions and Changes. They will also use a variety of equipment to investigate the control of devices. They will have the opportunity to develop their word processing skills and use the Internet and a range of CD Rom material for researching aspects of our topic on slavery.
History/ Geography: Topic on slavery. Children will consider the slave trade, and will talk about the Abolition 200 movement. They will particularly consider the link between the slave trade and Bristol.
RE: Children will follow a unit of work on Islam, looking particularly at Muslim beliefs and practices.
PE: Children will have the opportunity to develop a variety of ball skills in games such as Cricket and Rounders. Outside school they will continue to have swimming lessons and will begin tennis lessons. A teacher will also come in from a local secondary school to give dance lessons.
Design and Technology: Children will follow a unit of work in which they will investigate toys with moving parts, and then will design and make their own moving toy.
Music: A teacher will come in from a local secondary school to give Music lessons.
Art: Children will follow a unit of work in which they use textiles to represent a familiar story. They will investigate a variety of ways of joining textiles and combining them with other materials.
Modern Foreign Languages: Children will continue to learn Spanish in their class with opportunities across the curriculum.
