Year 5 - Spring (Terms 3 & 4)

Mathematics: As well as a continuation of work on mental maths strategies, children will consolidate their skills in understanding rounding, decimal notation, multiplication, co-ordinates, 2D shape, area and perimeter, time, fractions. We will also be carrying out number investigations to allow children to use problem solving skills in context.  All children will be expected to practise their 10 x 10 times tables.

 

English: Children will continue to focus on a range of texts to include myths, fables, legends and traditional stories. They will explore Narrative Poems, and will practise the skills of locating information, using sources, note taking and presenting information. In addition to this children will further develop their comprehension skills and extend their understanding of grammatical features.  In particular they will be given opportunities to write for a range of audiences and purposes.  It is expected that children will continue to read regularly at home to increase their vocabulary and general understanding of text as well as practise spellings on a daily basis, which will be monitored by their set teacher.

 

Science: Children will be looking in detail at various aspects of Changing States of Materials and the Earth, Sun and Moon.  There will be opportunities for children to develop their investigational skills through practical experiences.

 

I.C.T:  Children will visit the I.C.T. Suite once a week following a Unit of Work on Spreadsheets. They will have the opportunity to develop their word processing skills and use the Internet and a range of CD Rom material for researching aspects of our Geography Water topic. 

 

History: There are no History units this term, however work on Literacy and current affairs link to historical knowledge.

 

Geography: Children will study 'Water Around Us'. This will include water treatment and provision, waste water and water conservation. 

 

Religious Education: Children will look at aspects of the Sikh religion, discussing its principles, and history.

 

Art:  Children will investigate different uses of and designs of containers, and, using what they have found out, will design and make their own containers.

 

Music:  Children will be encouraged to explore ways in which sound patterns can be combined and manipulated.  Physical Education: This term in their PE lessons children will develop their Football, Hockey and invasion games skills. Children will further their swimming and badminton skills outside school.

 

Design and Technology: Children will follow a unit in which they design and make biscuits for a children's party.

 

Personal, Social and Health Education/Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL):  Children will study various aspects of SEAL such as Good to be Me. Children will address other issues of personal health and safety and will follow a programme of drugs education.  Circle Time will provide the forum for a good deal of the PSHE and SEAL this year.

 

Modern Foreign Languages:  Children will continue to learn Spanish in their class with opportunities across the curriculum.
