Year 5 - Autumn (Terms 1 & 2)

Numeracy:  A large emphasis will be placed on developing oral and mental arithmetic skills. In addition, we shall reinforce the concept of place value, addition and subtraction, properties of number, multiplication and division metric measurements, symmetry, properties of shape, fractions. We will also be carrying out number investigations to allow children to use problem solving skills in context.  All children will be expected to practise their 10 x 10 times tables.

 

Literacy:  As well as regular work on reading, spelling, punctuation and handwriting, children will focus on sharing a range of fiction, poetry and non-fiction texts, as well as playscripts.  They will be studying the writing process and will be given the opportunity to write for a variety of audiences. They will be encouraged to be attentive listeners and to participate in a number of Speaking and Listening activities such as recitation of poetry.

 

Science:  Children will follow units of work about Keeping Healthy and Sound. They will carry out research and investigations and will link their experiences to scientific knowledge.

 

Geography:  There are no Geography units this term, however work on Literacy and current affairs link to geographical knowledge.

 

History:  Children will study the Tudor period of history, looking at the lives of the monarchs, and the differences between the life styles of the rich and poor.

 

ICT:  Children will use the ICT suite and in-class computers to develop their word processing skills; they will also use these and the interactive whiteboard to follow Units of Work on Graphical Modelling and Database use, as well as work to support Literacy, Numeracy and other curriculum areas. There will also be opportunities for Internet research.

 

Religious Education:  Children will study Christianity this term: looking at the Bible, why it matters to so many people and will learn more about the Christmas story.

 

Art:  Children will develop their skills in observational drawing and colour mixing and matching in different media, and collage.  They will also look at still lives by a variety of artists. Children will also have the opportunity over the course of the year, to spend two half terms with a specialist art teacher - Mrs Summers.

 

Music:  Children will be encouraged to join in different singing activities in order further to develop their basic musical skills. They will also be given the opportunity to make use of percussion instruments in links to our Science topic on Sound and to our Design and Technology work on making a musical instrument.

 

Physical Education: At school they will develop their rugby and basic ball skills in Games lessons and will also develop dance and gymnastics sequences. Off the school premises, children have the opportunity to take swimming and badminton lessons.

 

Design Technology:  Children will follow a unit of work in which they will design and make a musical instrument.

 

Personal, Social and Health Education/Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning: Children will study various aspects of SEAL such as New Beginnings. Children will address other issues of personal health and safety and will follow a programme of drugs education.  Circle Time will provide the forum for a good deal of the PSHE and SEAL this year.

 

Modern Foreign Languages: Children will begin to learn Spanish in their class with opportunities across the curriculum.
