Year 4 - Autumn (Terms 1 & 2)

Literacy                                                                               

 

  • To revise work on verbs, investigating tense (past, present and future) in sentences.
  • Select powerful verbs and adjectives when editing own stories.
  • Plan a story by mapping out its main stages. Focus on 'gripping' story openings and character development for Historical Stories.
  • (Persuasive letter writing.) Instrumental Writing.
  • Investigate spelling patterns and selected 'topic' vocabulary through weekly spelling lists. (Focus on homophones, suffixes and double consonants.)
  • Play scripts

 

Numeracy

 

  • Read and write whole numbers to at least 10000 in figures and words and know what each digit represents.
  • Learn 'doubles' and 'near doubles'.
  • Recognise negative numbers in context (e.g. on a number line or temperature scale).
  • Make estimates up to about 250 and estimate a proportion e.g. half, quarter

 

Science

 

  • Know the difference between solids and liquids and learn to separate mixtures.
  • To learn about their own skeleton and those of other vertebrates. Observe how muscles work in pairs to move bones and learn about the importance of joints for movement.
  • Hot & cold and insulation.
  • To undertake a bone length survey and interpret the evidence.

 

History

 

  • Investigate the proper use of artefacts for the interpretation of ancient Egyptian history.
  • To visit Egyptology Department of Bristol Museum and take part in a hands on workshop.

 

R.E

 

  • Through our study of Judaism the children will explore the importance of family and community in religious life.
  • To make a visit to a local synagogue and meet with a representative from the Jewish Faith

 

Art

  • Observational Drawing.
  • To explore warm and cold colours in 'mood paintings'.
  • To practise colour mixing suitable for paintings that express feelings.
  • To investigate sculptures in natural settings.

 

Geography

 

  • Investigate news items which exemplify lifestyles and events in different countries and the Bristol area.

 

ICT

  • To use 'Word' to improve writing and editing skills.
  • To use CD ROMs and Internet search engines to aid research skills.

 

Music

  • To develop individual ideas of musical notation and practise listening skills to aid music appreciation.
  • To improvise around a theme for performance with an orchestra.

 

P.E

  • To establish the link between exercise, health and ways of monitoring personal fitness.
  • The children will participate in Hockey, Rugby, Gymnastics and Dance activities to develop their enjoyment and skills.
