Year 2 - Summer (Terms 5 & 6)
Literacy - In terms 5 and 6 we will be continuing to look at information texts as part of our work on non-fiction, as well as studying non-chronological reports, which are non-fiction texts typically organised by characteristics and attributes, for example a report on a town might be organised into population, situation, facilities. Our work on narrative this term will focus on extended stories by significant authors. We will also be looking at humorous and nonsense poetry, including tongue-twisters and riddles.
Numeracy - We will be starting to order numbers up to 1000. We will be continuing to solve 'real-life' problems, especially using the one pound coin when dealing with money. We will be looking at strategies for addition and subtraction bridging tens numbers, and also the addition of one 2 digit number to another. We will be working on capacity, introducing the litre and millilitre, and finding right angles, as well as looking at symmetrical patterns and shapes.
History & Geography - Our combined history and geography topic this term is the seaside, which combines looking at the geographical features of seaside destinations and why people like to go there, with a look at seaside holidays as they were in the past. The topic includes a trip to the museum in Weston-Super-Mare, which has a fantastic exhibition concentrating on seaside holidays of years gone by.
Science - Our science topic for these two terms are electricity, during which we learn about and make electrical circuits, and health & growth, when we learn about eating healthily, the importance of exercise, how babies grow and change, and safety with medicines.
Religious Education - We will be looking at two R.E. topics this term, religious leadership, and 'special places.' In our work on religious leaders we will be thinking about the qualities leaders must have, and why some people become religious leaders. During our special places topic, we talk about the places of worship for different religions, and we visit a local mosque to find out about the Muslim 'special place'.
Design & Technology - Our first D & T topic is making vehicles with wheels to help s think about different types of vehicles and how axles work. Our second links with the science topic 'electricity', as well as our geography topic 'the seaside', when we use our knowledge of circuits to help us make a working model of a lighthouse.
PSHE - Our topics this term are 'relationships' and 'changes' which helps us to prepare for Year 3 at Colston's. Also as part of our PSHE curriculum linked with science, the school nurse will talk to us about safety with medicines.
PE - Our indoor p.e. lessons this term will be on dance, and we will continue our outdoor games whenever weather permits.
Music - In our music lessons during terms 5 and 6 we will be exploring pitch, timbre, tempo and dynamics.
ICT- We will be continuing to use ICT to help us investigate our current topic, as well as using programmable floor turtles and computer software to investigate sequencing instructions.
