Colston's Primary School

Year 2 - Spring (Terms 3 & 4)

Literacy:   In our narrative unit during these terms we will be reading, talking about, acting out and writing 'traditional' or 'fairy' stories.  We will also be looking at different stories by the same author, looking at the characters and themes that link these stories. In our non-fiction unit we will be looking at 'explanation' texts, using time and causal connectives to explain processes, for example life cycles.  We will also be thinking about the various features of non-fiction texts, for example using index and contents pages and glossaries.

Numeracy: In numeracy during terms 3 and 4 we will be counting on and back in ones tens and hundreds, rehearsing addition and subtraction facts up to 20 and adding three numbers together mentally.  We will be estimating and weighing in kilograms and grams, reading time to the half hour, and organising data into block graphs.  We will also be learning about multiplication as repeated addition, and starting to understand division as grouping.

Science:  In science this term, we will be studying 'variation,' where we look at how plants and animals can be grouped together and how differences can be measured, and 'plants and animals in the local environment' in which we look at the habitats around us and what lives and grows there.  We also look at plant reproduction and grow our own seeds.

History: We will be looking at the causes and effects of the Fire of London, and finding out what Samuel Pepys wrote about it.

Religious Education: We will be thinking about books that are special to us, and then finding out about books that are special to people of different religions.  We will also be finding out about the Easter story.

Art:We will be looking at buildings, and thinking about the shapes that we can see and the different textures that we can feel.

Geography:  In a topic called 'Global Eye' we look at how spectacles can be recycled to help people in poorer parts of the world.
