Year 2 - Autumn (Terms 1 & 2)

 Literacy:  In literacy we will be looking at poetry, thinking about structure, layout and punctuation, as well as the sort of descriptive language used in poems. In our narrative unit we will be reading, discussing and writing stories with settings that are familiar to us.  In our non-fiction unit we will be looking at reading, following and writing, sets of instructions.

 

Numeracy:  We will start by counting objects and ordering numbers up to 100,adding and subtracting teens numbers andlooking at place value.  We will also start to measure in metres and centimetres, and look at 3D shapes as well as continuing to learn addition facts up to 20.

 

Science: We will be looking at the type of plants and animals found in the local environment and the ways in which we can classify them.  We will also be looking at the properties of different materials, and thinking about why certain materials are used to make certain things.

 

History:  We will be studying two famous women from history, Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale, seeking to answer questions about why we remember them, what they did, how we know about them and why there are differences in the way history has treated them.  We also look at the Gunpowder Plot, and the reasons behind it.

 

Geography:  Our ongoing geography topic, 'where in the world' encourages us to look at the similarities and differences between our own locality and other localities around the world, and to think about the ways in which people travel.  We also spend a week looking at Bristol's twin city of Beira in Mozambique, and again at similarities and differences between them.

 

Religious Education:  In RE in terms 1 and 2 we look at people who are important to us and people who are important in different religions.  We also focus on festivals of light, looking especially at Diwali and Christmas.

 

Art:  We look at the patterns we find around us in nature, and learn about using templates to make a collage.

 

Design and Technology:  We learn about weaving, using this technique to make a Christmas card, and about joining materials together, learning how to sew a glove puppet or soft toy together.

 

PSHE:  Our topics are 'new beginnings', citizenship and firework and road safety.

 

Music:  We will be looking at duration and pitch.

 

ICT: We will be using ICT to research our topic work, as well as starting to learn about word processing.
