Year 1 - Summer (Terms 5 & 6)

Our priority in the Summer term of Year 1 is for the children to develop further independent organisational skills and encouraging independent recording of information with increased detail. 

 

English:     In phonics the children will be learning spell with increasing accuracy and recognition of spelling patterns.  The reading and writing focus will be on poetry and narrative text.

 

Maths: The children will be developing further strategies for adding and subtracting and becoming confident at using them to solve simple number problems.  They will also be exploring number patterns to count on and back.  They will continue to develop their understanding of time, measure and shape.

 

Science:    The topics will include 'Pushes and Pulls' and 'Sound and Hearing'. The focus will be on recording and interpreting data.

 

Geography: We will be comparing and contrasting an 'Island home' with our own locality, with the aid of Jeremy Bear and Katie Morag.

 

Design Technology:  There will be opportunities throughout the term to practise the skills previously learned.

 

Information and Communication Technology: The children will be exploring different ways to represent information graphically and to understand how to follow and give instructions to make things happen.

 

Music: This term we will be listeners, composers, conductors and performers! We will be exploring ways to follow and represent our own musical ideas graphically.

 

Art:   We will be using a range of media to explore and make 3d sculptures, using natural materials and the world around us for inspiration!            

 

Religious Education: This term the children will explore artefacts belonging to different faiths that have specials meanings and significance and they will celebrate our wonderful world.

 

Physical Education and Games: In dance, the children will be developing interpretive dance skills to a range of musical stimuli. They will also be continuing to develop their gymnastic skills, exploring body shape and supporting body weight. In outdoor games we shall be playing simple team games.

 

Personal, Social and Health Education:     In both PSHE and Circle Time sessions we will be exploring relationships and preparing children for change.

 

History:    The children will continue to develop their enquiry skills by comparing and contrasting Homes in the past with Homes they live in now.
