Colston's Primary School

Year 1 - Spring (Terms 3 & 4)

Our priority in the spring term of Year 1 is for the children to develop further independent organisational skills and encouraging independent recording of information.

English:     Reading will continue to play an important role in our Literacy sessions.  The main focus of the phonic sessions will be to introduce new letter sounds and use these to read High Frequency words and new vocabulary. The reading and writing focus will be narrative and non narrative, which will include labels, captions and lists.

Maths: The children will be developing further strategies for adding and subtracting.

We will continue to count, read, write (in numerals and words) and order numbers beyond 20.  We will also be investigating the related vocabulary for time, measure and shape.

Science:    The activities will continue to be largely practical, but the emphasis will be on the simple recording of information.  Topics will include 'Ourselves' and 'Growing Plants'.

Geography: We hope that Jeremy Bear will continue on his travels with class members, but there will be no main geography topic this term.

Design Technology:  The main focus of this term will be design and safety. The children will explore healthy eating and how to make a moving picture.

Information and Communication Technology: Activities will help to explore the information around us and how this exists in different forms. We will also look at 'modelling' and simple labelling and classifying.

Music: We will continue to sing songs, rhymes and chants to  enhance learning in other curriculum areas. We will be exploring beat and rhythmic patterns.

Art:   We will be using a range of media to explore and make portraits of ourselves.

Religious Education: Our topics will include 'belonging' and 'New life' where we will look at a variety of faiths and cultures.

Physical Education and Games: Dance, exploring how we can move, will be developed throughout the term.  We shall also be undertaking gymnastics, concentrating on balancing and body weight transference. In Outdoor Games we shall continue to develop our ball skills.

Personal, Social and Health Education:     In both PSHE and Circle Time sessions we will be talking about setting our own realistic targets and finding out what we are good at and what we would like to be better at.

History:    The children will be developing their enquiry by comparing and contrasting toys in the past with toys they play with now.
