Colston's Primary School

Learning at Colston's: Inclusion

This is the statement which underpins all of the policies and practices at Colston's primary school.

  • Colston's Primary School is committed to inclusion
  • The school aims to provide an appropriate and high quality education for all children living in our local communities
  • We believe that all children have a common entitlement to a broad and balanced academic and social curriculum
  • This will readily be made accessible to them and they will be fully included in all aspects of school life

We believe that Inclusion is essential in ensuring the equality of opportunity for all learners whatever their age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability, attainment and background. This demonstrates our commitment to valuing the diversity of the school community.  We will pay particular attention to the provision for and achievement of all, in our school activities and policies.

THE STEERING GROUP

This is a group of people who meet on a regular basis in school to discuss ways of ensuring Colston's continues to review its provision to ensure it is inclusive in all of its practices.

Current members are:

  • Julie Price (Colston's Inclusion Coordinator)
  • Jean Ashcroft (teacher, governor)
  • Clarice Crahart  (parent / SMSA)
  • Sophie Ahmed (parent)
  • Jane Andrews (parent governor)
  • Members of the school's senior management team
  • Charles Waithe (parent)

Current Activities

The group is currently involved in processing the results of an inclusion questionnaire which was sent out to all members of the school community earlier in 2007.  This meant that children, parents, staff, governors all had their chance to give opinions about how the school can continue to develop.  The questionnaire was based on the work of the team who produced the Index for Inclusion (the Centre for Studies in Inclusive Education www.csie.org.uk ). The results will be shared with children, parents, staff and governors later this year.

Previous Activities

In 2004 the Inclusion Steering Group sent off a questionnaire to school community members and results were used to inform changes in the school such as improvements in the playground activities available for children.  The group has also made improvements to the information sent out to new reception children.
