Colston's Primary School

Travel Plan aims to make travelling to school safe for all.

Many members of the school community (children, parents, carers, staff and governors) have expressed concern about safety in travelling to Colston's.  Over the last year the Colston's School Travel Plan 2008 has been drawn up with the assistance of the parents, governors and the School Travel Action Group.  The plan draws information from surveys of perceptions children, parents and staff, pedestrian and vehicle traffic and access to the site.  The plan also takes account of local public transport and travel information  as well as activities and facilities in school.  A small group of parents and governors has been formed to bring this plan into being. If you feel that you would like to contribute in any way to this group please leave your name and details at the school office in an envelope headed School Travel Plan.

The objectives of the action plan are as follows:

  a. increasing walking, use of public transport, cycling and scootering

  b. plan for physical and material improvements to travel safety in the streets around the school

  c. reduce illegal and obstructive parking and driving around the school site

  d. improve quality of access for disabled drivers, parents and carers

  e. reduce use of cars in traveling to and around school

  f. continue to integrate travel choices into the work of the school

  g. increase the quality of information and equipment available to parents and carers to inform and support travel choices

  h. involving parents and children in the promotion and publicity of travel choices.

1 Increasing walking, use of public transport, cycling and scootering

Reintroduce Walking Bus schemes . Ensure parents are aware of bus and train routes. Promote independent walking. Improve security of cycle and scooter park.

2 Plan for and suggest physical and material improvements to travel safety in the streets around the school

Explore extension of speed limit, speed limit warning signs and no stopping areas with BCC . Recommend improvement to condition of pavements around school as well as junctions on South Rd / Redland Rd, South Rd / Cotham Grove, Cotham Park North and Archfield Road .Explore Park and Stride area nearer school.

3 Reduce illegal and obstructive parking and driving around the school site

Continue to monitor parking and report offenders to police so as to maintain supervision by Community Support Officer. Request Police to monitor traffic speeds within 20 mph zone on Cotham Grove and Cotham Park North. Explore designated drop off zone.

4 Improve quality of access for disabled drivers, parents  carers and for staff

Continue to publicise  the double yellow lines on the junction of Elmgrove Rd with Freemantle Rd as a legal parking place for Blue Badge Holders, consult this group further about their needs and work with BCC to promote them. Explore parking areas for staff with BCC re RPZ

5 Reducing use of cars in travelling to and around school,.

Continue to promote Park and Stride scheme. Consult with drivers more closely as regards Park and Stride and car sharing.

6 Continue to integrate travel choices into the work of the school, 

Work with pupils and teachers through ECO schools, school council and assemblies.  Continue to support school work re travel issues

7 Increasing the quality of information and equipment available to parents and carers to inform and support travel choices

Obtain material from sources such as Claim the Streets, Walk to School Week and BCC.  Review travel information in the prospectus and other information to parents. Explore the school website as a resource.

8 Involving parents and  promotion and publicity of travel choices,

Work with parents who walk, drive or travel in other ways in the wider school community to create school specific information about travel choices such as a street map.
